By photo size

Three sizes cover almost everything

Grouped by the actual dimensions, so you can see at a glance which documents share a format.

35 × 45 mm

The ICAO rectangular frame (413 × 531 px at 300 DPI) — the most common size worldwide.

2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm)

The US square. Used for US passports and US visas — never interchangeable with 35 × 45 mm.

50 × 70 mm

The larger Canadian format for passports and PR cards — bigger than both 35 × 45 mm and 2 × 2 inch.

Questions

FAQ

What is the most common passport photo size?

35 × 45 mm (3.5 × 4.5 cm) — the ICAO rectangular frame used by most of the world, including India, the Philippines, Australia, Japan, the UK, and all Schengen countries. The main exception is the United States, which uses a 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) square. Canada's passport is larger again, at 50 × 70 mm.

Is a visa photo the same size as a passport photo?

Sometimes, but not always. A US visa uses the same 2 × 2 inch square as a US passport, but a Canadian visa is 35 × 45 mm while the Canadian passport is 50 × 70 mm — so you can't reuse one for the other. Check the specific document's page.

What file size do photo uploads need?

It varies by portal: India's Passport Seva wants 10–250 KB, a US DS-160 wants 54–240 KB, and Canada's visa upload targets about 240 KB. Sukat compresses to whatever exact KB target the portal sets.

Can one photo work for several countries?

If they share the 35 × 45 mm frame and a plain light background, one well-shot photo can be cropped and compressed to each country's file rules. The size stays the same; only the KB ceiling and background shade differ.
